Sharia law in Australia?

Let’s hope he keeps on meaning it

There are moves afoot by the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils to lobby for “legal pluralism”, and allow Sharia law to coexist alongside Asutralian law. This proposition was put in its submission to a parliamentary inquiry into the policy.
One of our top Muslim leaders, Sheik Mohamadu Nawas Saleem came out in support of the idea. He said that it could operate in the family law system through a new model of Islamic arbitration.

Reassuringly, the Attorney-General Robert McClelland definitively put a stop to speculation. In a statement reported in the press he was clear and emphatic:

As our citizenship pledge makes clear, coming to Australia means obeying Australian laws and upholding Australian values, … Australia’s brand of multiculturalism promotes integration. If there is any inconsistency between cultural values and the rule of law, then Australian law wins out….
We were blessed to live in a stable democracy underpinned by the rule of law.
People who migrate to Australia do so because of the fact we have a free, open and tolerant society where men and women are equal before the law irrespective of race, religious or cultural background.
Indeed, all applicants for citizenship swear collective allegiance to the people of Australia, and undertake to respect our customs and abide by our laws. The values underpinning those principles will not be changing.

Fortunately the Attorney-General seems to take his role seriously. He certainly has more common sense than Britain’s quite loopy and cowardly Education Minister Michael Gove  and that other serious fruit loop, the Archbishop of Canterbury.

But we already have elements of sharia law in Australia, which the A-G declines to comment on. The government has made changes to our laws to introduce Sharia banking, Muslim men are not prevented from being polygamous (and the taxpayer pays for the wives and the offspring in many cases), our food hygiene and anti-cruelty laws are giving way to classification of food as “halal” or not, thus giving preferentiality to Muslim workers and virtually forcing non-Muslims to buy “halal” food and thus contribute to Muslim “charities” (wink wink), we have restrictions on free speech (mostly “voluntary” but that corresponds to sharia law where non-Muslims must not annoy Muslims). Above all we have to officially show “respect” to Islam and not expose its lies. Compared to all this, Islamic family courts are not such a big deal, and I am sure the Muslims will wear us down on this one.
The A-G is being disingenuous – surely he knows what I know. His words are probably meant to placate the rest of us while demographic changes are doing to Australia what they are doing elsewhere.
    I am NOT reassured.

I feel it’s a disgrace, when Muslims who’ve entered our country, quote – “swear collective allegiance to the people of Australia, and undertake to respect our customs and abide by our laws” unquote, then decide they no longer wish to do so, once they’ve been accepted under those conditions! Extremists, work tirelessly to have Laws changed to suit their own requirements…in OUR country! How dare they enter our country & dictate how we SHOULD be conducting our lives! Anyone who behaves this way, should be sent right back to where they came from!! One senior Muslim representative said that woman who bare too much skin, deserve to be raped!! OMG….get him OUT of our country, along with anyone else who wants to change things to suit themselves! There are many other places around the world, that are far more compatible with their way of life, including their OWN country! Becoming an Australian Citizen, has responsibilities….& that doesn’t include, changing our Laws to suit their needs!!!!
